Many fish feed companies keep a good listening ear to suggestions, feedbacks that my company furnishes them with including pricing.
We can't say we are alone but God is good always n that informs some allowing us to check out there feeds
Let's start with foreign feeds. Biomars, coppens and Ziegler fishfeed are feeds that we experimented on during this period. Specifically we tested them on our fish both in earthern ponds n concrete tanks.
The results were quite surprising because we understood that there is a difference between "best before " $ "expired "
Most imported feeds are carrying best before doesn't mean that after d date feed is not fit for fish but it simply means it's quality has reduced. Now here is d twist. Best before in concrete/tarpaulin tank fish culture.
We found out that after the best before date up-to 6minths the feeds still had good aroma, colour and fish still ate it very well and developed. The difference was not that significant maybe because as its in earthern ponds other supplementary feeding like insects, flies, plankton were there.
In tarpaulin tanks we noticed slightly higher water colouration but apart from that the fish ate it well. Now after the six months after the best before tag we noted a congealing/crumbling of the feeds. We noticed reduced feed intake especially in the tarpaulin or concrete tanks but fish in earthern ponds were OK with it.
We have yet to notice yet any mortality..... Grow out fishes pls
In the fry, fingerlings there was no significant difference in colour, aroma or acceptability that after the bestbefore
It was only after the 6months from date of best before that we noticed reduced feed intake of which introduction of fishvitamin to induce appetite, general growth plus a little probiotics /antibiotic intermittently helped control any issues of disease outbreak. Now if your water management is tops then you are good to go.
In our branded fishfeedsales I used Top feed, Aquamax fishfeed and I must I was overly impressed with Aquamax. It's oil content, colour, aroma stayed like any foreign feed. It competed and met up-to All that the imported feeds could. Top feeds impressed me also .
My choices were purely CHANCE.I am a key distributors to ALL these companies and most times when bulk buyers can't dispose of before usage they ALWAYS ask us if they can continue it so as not to lose there money.
What affects most of the feeds was mostly bad storage condition including moisture issues but I can for above mentioned feeds they One local unbranded feed that really impressed us due to fact that our farmers in the east hardly like sinking feeds was shadis fishfeed. It is a good feed. Even in bad moist condition it didn't grow mold and even when it did fishes accepted it and still developed. I encountered no mortality.
Now I am not saying you should use feeds after best before but am saying that some of the feeds still passed the fish acceptability test which will be a comfort for
Most farmers
SPECIAL mention will go-to biomars n coppens feeds as I witnessed young men who used these feeds for years to grow fish in earthern ponds in Anambra State and it boosted them since they got it at very low prices because of best before has long passed
Some feeds are Easily broken down and those ones are those that easily lose quality even before best before ,worse after and fish hardly eat
[: They are usually crumbled, white while some are dusty, unwholesome in appearance
Finally I can say that most of the foreign feeds Enlightened me that ,that a feed has passed best before doesn't mean it has expired .An expired feed is NOT FIT for both animal consumption and MUST not be used.
